Moving through the pain

Woke up this morning in such pain. Could barely move. Ugh. Joints cramped, muscles tied up, felt like every bone in my body was out to get me.

Got moving though. Stretched and moved even before I got out of bed. While I was still warm.

Then I had my exercise.

Much better now. Moving seems to be the only thing that helps, sometimes.

So, I’ll keep moving.

I am a long-term multiple (mild) Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI or TBI) survivor who experienced assaults, falls, car accidents, sports-related injuries in the 1960s, '70s, '80s, and '90s. My last mild TBI was in 2004, but it was definitely the worst of the lot. I never received medical treatment for my injuries, some of which were sports injuries (and you have to get back in the game!), but I have been living very successfully with cognitive/behavioral (social, emotional, functional) symptoms and complications since I was a young kid. I’ve done it so well, in fact, that virtually nobody knows that I sustained those injuries… and the folks who do know, haven’t fully realized just how it’s impacted my life. It has impacted my life, however. In serious and debilitating ways. I’m coming out from behind the shields I’ve put up, in hopes of successfully addressing my own (invisible) challenges and helping others to see that sustaining a TBI is not the end of the world, and they can, in fact, live happy, fulfilled, productive lives in spite of it all.

  1. BB –
One of your other readers suggested this and I have found it to be incredibly helpful – magnesium – I take a lot, plus 4000 mg Omega 3 (anti-inflammatory) and Vit D and C. Magnesium acts as a muscle relaxant – but no groggy feeling or anything like that. Really worth trying.

  2. Hi BB – Exercise is very good – I don’t feel the same if I don’t do yoga or go for a bike ride in the morning. Funny, I woke up yesterday with just those symptoms you describe (maybe a little milder), limbs like blocks of wood, nerves locked up. Where does this come from I wonder? I always get it when I’m fatigued.

I’ll have to try magnesium, I never thought of that before.

  3. T – I agree, exercise is really good. I took magnesium yesterday, and today I don’t feel as achey. Not sure if it was the supplement, or maybe just the weather. Or the fact that today is Saturday 🙂
